Our History

The Hickory Sportsman Club was founded in 1985 by Jim Correll and Charles Young, two local sports enthusiasts who shared a vision of bringing the greatest names in sports to Hickory, North Carolina. Their goal was to create a private gathering place where members of the community could hear firsthand stories and insights from legendary athletes while enjoying fellowship centered around a shared passion for sports.

What began as a small group of local sports fans quickly developed into one of the region’s most distinctive private clubs. Built around exclusive membership and a tradition of elegant gatherings, the club became known for hosting black-tie dinners featuring prominent figures from the world of professional and collegiate athletics. These events offered members the rare opportunity to engage with sports icons in an intimate setting while celebrating the camaraderie that sports inspire.

Over the decades, the Hickory Sportsman Club has maintained its founding spirit—bringing together a community of sports lovers while preserving the traditions of storytelling, fellowship, and appreciation for athletic achievement. Today, the club continues to host select events each year featuring prominent speakers, carrying forward the legacy established by Correll and Young more than four decades ago.
